Social media is constantly growing in popularity as people use it as their one-stop shop to see what is going on in the news, keep up with family and friends, and see the latest updates on their favorite companies. Knowing your social media community is important as a PR professional because you must effectively be able to target to your client’s audience. With so many people on today’s popular platforms, your posts need to be well thought out to stand out in the large and lengthy news feed. Here are some tips to ensure your posts catch your follower’s attention.
Make sure your message is clear and concise. The best rule of thumb when writing social media is to use short and simple sentences. These posts are likely to keep your readers attention. Try to make your posts around two to three sentences so you can stay within any character limitations and keep it concise while still engaging your followers.
Add a link. Links help add additional information that can help followers learn more about your message. Social media gives users a lot of information to digest, so make sure your link doesn’t take up a lot of space in your post. If it is a longer link, consider using a link shortener such as Bitly.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Giving your followers a visual aspect to accompany your text is proven to increase engagement and views. Images can help shorten word count, convey a message, or simply add some excitement to your posts. According to Brain Rules, “When people hear information, they’re likely to remember only 10 percent of that information three days later; however, if a relevant image is paired with that same information, people retained 65 percent of the information three days later.”
Tag relevant accounts within your post. Are you posting about a show you are watching or amazing service you got at a restaurant? Make sure to tag their account in your post. It gives the other party a great review, while giving yourself the possibility of being featured on their profile. It’s great for both companies and you may see an increase in engagement or followers.
Utilize the #hashtag. Hashtags allow people to be able to follow different topics of interest. If strategically placed in your posts, they can expand your content reach, amplify your brand and much more. Make sure your message isn’t lost in a crowd of hashtags. Keep it to two, maybe three at most per post.
Pick the right platform. Each social media vehicle has a niche that can help determine where your post will best fit. For each platform, there are different expectations that audiences of that specific platform want to see. According to an article by Entrepreneur, the general guidelines for what to post on each platform are:
- Facebook: Videos and curated content.
- Instagram: High-res photos, quotes and stories.
- Twitter: News, blog posts and GIFs.
- LinkedIn: Jobs, company news and professional content.
- Pinterest: Infographics and step-by-step photo guides.
The decision of what platform(s) to use for your business or personal accounts, can be a powerful way to engage with your community while building traffic to your pages.
